Should I feed foxes?

Our towns and villages provide foxes with a ready feast. However, they should not lose their natural wariness of humans and therefore should not be fed.

Close proximity can be dangerous
Feeding foxes lets them grow quite used to being with humans so that they lose their natural shyness. However, tame foxes often cause problems and eventually have to be shot. Not everyone enjoys having foxes wander into the house or wants them at their barbecue in the garden. Moreover, such close contact with wild animals increases the likelihood of acquiring transmissible parasites and diseases (for more).

Do not feed foxes!
To avoid problems between foxes and people living together in urban areas foxes must not be encouraged to become tame.
  • Never feed a fox.
  • Chase friendly-looking foxes out of your garden.
  • Wild animals like foxes do not belong in people’s homes!
